Ohhhhh dear, you too huh. I had a very similar experience with Freelancer. Full to bursting with scammers I'm afraid. My first contact was some guy who asked me for a lot of personal and career details, which I complied with even though it sounded a bit too intrusive. Then he told me that he wanted to 'rent' my identity from me so that he could put another profile up on Upwork to get more work. Scumbag offered me a monthly rental fee for doing nothing except letting him pretend to be me! Can you believe that! Lord knows what he could have got up to in my good name, and probably not pay me anyway. Obviously I said no. Then I got a guy in Asia, can't remember if it was India or Pakistan, somewhere like that. Said he was building a team of writers who he could farm a lot of work out to. This time a stupidly agreed. I wrote a trial piece and he was delighted with it. I did that freely though I dare say he got paid for it. Then he gave me a landing page to write. I did a great job of it and he loved it. Then he told me that the client had rejected it and had chosen to write his own copy. When I checked it out, as you might have guessed, it was all mine. To cut a long story short, Freelancer and Upwork are just too full of rats. The more this gets out the better.
