The Island Part Seven

The calm before the storm and a crow of portent on the fence

“ You’ll never believe what’s just happened.” Breathlessly panted Pinter.

“ The bloody potato peeling machine in the kitchen has sprung a leek and flooded the entire dining room!”

I had more than enough on my plate to worry about than Pinter’s potatoe crisis. The man was clearly a panicker and just seemed to spend his time running around fighting whatever fire broke out next in a breathless sweat. Always it seemed he needed Kell. Whatever the crisis, Kell was the solution provider.

I must admit, Kell seemed capable of resolving almost anything with supreme confidence. The man was totally unflappable, and then some.

The events to follow over the course of the rest of the day were to show just what reserves of self-control this man had.

It was time for me to finish my shift and just as I was thinking of him, Kell strode in with his big boyish grin to announce he’d take over the bar to let me get some rest.

As I walked into the beer garden there sat at a long bench and table was the girl from the boat trip over hours earlier.

I sat next to her and we had a nice chat. She told me her name was Helen and that she was from Canada. She…
