This a very interesting piece for me. One or two observations from my understanding is this; us humans only do anything in exchange for some form of potential, promised or actual pay-off. That goes for gambling on horses as much as it does for establishing a dictatorship.

In Germany, Hitler’s rise was due to the country being hamstrung after the First World War, due to having to pay repatriation to the allies on the winning side.

What Hitler did was promise the German people a way out of the straightened circumstances they found themselves in.

At one point he had a massive stroke of luck, a shift in world economies which worked in Germany’s favour. The people accredited that new found prosperity as a sign of Hitler delivering on his earlier promises. And so they willingly fell in behind him. They truly believed that he was going to lead them all to the economic promised land.

Then he started persecuting the Jews and stole their businesses, gifting those businesses to German people. That was taken as yet another sign of Hitler delivering on his earlier promises. The rest is history. It makes for a very interesting understanding of what lay behind World War Two.
