Ask any professional financial advisor which is the best approach to investing and he or she will tell you that you should create a mixed portfolio. That portfolio should include investments for the short, medium and long term. You should also have a mix of risks, from low-risk, low return to high-risk, high return. As a freelance writer, that is also how you should go about progressing your career.
Forty-five years ago I was a highly successful freelance copywriter, working mostly for one newspaper. That was good whilst it lasted, but when they laid all freelancers off to save money, I lost not just my job but also my entire career. Not too long after that, I lost my house, car and family. Lesson learned, do not put all your eggs in one basket.
Here I am in 2024 implementing a plan to avoid the risk of losing everything all over again. That is because Medium, on whom I had become over-reliant, decided to pivot and my income took a dive.
